2 years of Cultural Learnings!

I think I said this last year as well, but how time flies! December 11 marked the 2 year anniversary of me setting foot in the USA to start my new life here and December 12 marked my 2 years working at Freeport. Todd took a bunch of us out for lunch at Vincent's (which does an AWESOME rotisserie chicken) to celebrate which was really nice.

It also means that I'm past my obligation to stay at Freeport and don't have to pay my signing bonus back to them if I leave... yay! Not that I'm really planning to leave... not right away at least.

Even if I do leave Freeport, I do plan on staying in the Houston area though. I've grown used to the American way of life with its greater emphasis on the customer having the power, cheaper petrol and greater choice in... well everything.

Part of me would like to move to Los Angeles to be closer to my family there, but I've come to realise that Los Angeles is one of those places that is great to visit, but may not be the greatest place to live. Everything except for Asian food is much more expensive (and how much Asian food can you eat before it kills you?) and State Income taxes SUCK so I'd have to make like 30-40% more than I do now to be able to maintain my standard of living. Plus I'm not fond of the dry air or highways with no frontage roads.

In the spirit of settling, I've embarked on shopping for a house! I don't think I can convice Freeport to let me move too close to Houston, but I'm looking around the southern suburbs. There is a sub-division that I'm particularly fond of call Rodeo Palms, which is about 15-20 minutes south of downtown Houston. These are the two houses 2 storey 4/3.1 single storey 3/2 that I'm thinking about. I really like the bigger one, but I worry that it will cost me too much (time and money) to maintain... but we'll see. If they're still available in 5 months when my lease is up, maybe I can come in with a lowball offer and sweep it up cheap!

Also some of you may have heard already, but I'm coming back to Perth for Chinese New Year! I'll be there from 27/1/2009 to 19/2/2009. Looking forward to seeing everyone from home again and not having to cook for myself for a while ;P

Maybe Monday wasn't the wisest choice of day to blog...

Yeah I'm hell late writing this week. Mondays are proving kinda difficult because Terminator, Heroes and Prison Break are all on that night and I want to watch them! Sure I have set up my PC to be a DVR, but I just can't overcome to urge to watch them, especialll since they have ads on about the next episode that could spoil the episode I haven't watched yet.

Next week should temporarily fix my problem though, since the shows are about to go on Christmas hiatus.

It's going to be even worse next year as Battlestar Galactica, 24 and Lost also return. Man it's going to be a good couple of months for TV!

Better late than never...

No your calendar is not lying to you, nor have you stepped out of a time machine - I didn't do an update on Monday and today is Wednesday. I do have a semi legit excuse though... I went to the gym on Monday for the first time in like 1 month and I... was... fucking... SHATTERED. I think I had to fight off puking in the gym about 4 times, had to lie down twice and my 1:10 routine took me 1:50 to finish. It was shameful.

Shameful also is my fat chart... the water% is pretty low, but there is no denyig that my weight has gone into a steady climb over the last month, and it hasn't been due to exercise. I've been away from my schedule because of training, a conference culminated in the EAT FEST that is Thanksgiving.

By the way - I'm quickly thinking that Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday of them all. A gathering of family and friends and you start eating awesome food in the early afternoon and don't stop until you cry MAAA-TEI. I guess I really enjoy it because I don't have to cook it ;P if I were cooking I'd probably have a slightly different opinion...

So here's the situation: I'm coming back to Australia on Jan 29, which gives me just less than 2 months to get back to my peak condition. I think I can do it! I went to the gym today, 2 days after the first session and I managed to finish in about 1:10 and felt pretty good afterwards despite the pain. I figure if manage to do 3 gym and 2 cardio/softball a week I should in pretty good shape by the time I step off the plan in Australia.

Wish me luck! :)
